Oleksandr Zinchenko has claimed that Instagram deleted his story, in which the Manchester City player wished for the death of Russia president Vladimir Putin.
Thursday morning saw Putin launch a military operation against Ukraine, which caused Zinchenko to strongly lament Russia‘s decision on social media.
“I hope you die the most painful suffering death, creature,” read the caption on Putin‘s picture in Zinchenko‘s Instagram story.
Putin announced on Thursday that Russia will begin a military attack towards Ukraine and threatened those who were contemplating to intervene that there will face the consequences.
Zinchenko’s emotional message of support
The Manchester City player took to Instagram on Tuesday to demonstrate his support towards his compatriots through an emotional message.
“The whole civilised world is worried about the situation in my country,” Zinchenko wrote.
“I can’t stay back and strive to put my point across. In the photo – my country. The country where I was born and raised.
“A country whose colours I defend in the international sports arena. A country that we try to glorify and develop.
“A country whose borders must remain inviolable. My country belongs to Ukrainians and no one will ever be able to appropriate it. We will not give up! Glory to Ukraine.”
Shevchenko’s reaction
Former Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko posted a picture of his country’s map on Wednesday to send his own message of unity on social media.
Ukraine is my motherland! I have always been proud of my people and my country,” Shevchenko posted on Instagram.
“We have gone through many difficult times, and over the past 30 years we have formed as a nation! A nation of sincere, hardworking and freedom-loving citizens. This is our most important asset! Today is a difficult time for all of us. But we must unite! In unity, we will win! Glory to Ukraine!”
