Seconds stood between Sevilla and the UEFA Super Cup, but Sergio Ramos forced the 2016 final to extra-time and now all the record books show is a third consecutive year that has ended in defeat for the Europa League champions. When it comes to Europe’s second biggest cup competition Sevilla have no problems but whether it is simply bad luck or some mental obstacle, the Andalusians are unable to follow up their Europa league triumph with the Super Cup title. In 2014, Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo proved too much, and a year later and Sevilla went a step closer before Pedro ensured the trophy would be heading to Barcelona with an extra-time winner.
On Monday evening in Trondheim, Sevilla suffered an even more cruel defeat when just seconds from victory in normal time.Sergio Ramos took the tie to extra-time with virtually the last touch of the 90 minutes and less than two minutes before penalties, Dani Carvajal punished Jorge Sampaoli’s visibly tired side with a dramatic winner.
There is little time to dwell on the defeat as Sevilla face Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana this week and Sampaoli will be eager to prove his side can compete with the best, not just in terms of play but also results.
