Thomas Muller has admitted that Bayern Munich’s 2-1 loss to Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals might have been a different story had Harry Kane converted a golden opportunity.
The English striker, who has been integral to Bayern’s attack since his summer move, was presented with a prime chance in the first half but hit the post with a curling effort—something fans are used to seeing him bury. Muller acknowledged that Kane’s miss was a crucial turning point in the match, which ultimately saw Bayern fall short at home.
“We unfortunately missed a big chance in the first half with Harry, that would’ve given us a different feeling,” Muller said after the match. “Inter have good players with the ball who are able to take the pace off the game and slow it down, then play long balls to their strikers. They have experienced and physical players—it wasn’t a walk in the park, and we didn’t expect it to be.”
Bayern had a strong second half, creating several chances, but were unable to find the back of the net, despite Muller scoring their only goal. The German veteran reflected on the overall missed opportunities, stating, “We created chances in the second half but unfortunately couldn’t convert them.”
Kane, who moved to Bayern with the goal of finally ending his trophy drought, will need to step up in the second leg to keep their Champions League hopes alive. Bayern will now turn their attention to their next big fixture—a Bundesliga showdown against Borussia Dortmund. A win there would not only boost their confidence but could also help them extend their lead at the top of the league before heading to Italy for the decisive second leg against Inter.
