PMS refers to physical and emotional symptoms that occur in the one to two weeks before a woman’s period There is nothing fun about being on your period, and it can be tough being a woman sometimes but there’s much more you can do for PMS than reaching for a pain meds. Find the right combination of cures for your period symptoms and you can reduce your monthly periods into a minor inconvenience.
CUT OUT THE SALT: Lowering your salt intake is always a good idea. But if you’re battling period bloat, cut out the salt two weeks before your period comes and you won’t have to pull out your “fat” jeans.
TAKE A CAFFEINE BREAK: Caffeine is a great morning pick-me-up, but it also makes irritability and anxiety much worse. If mood swings are driving you crazy, consider cutting caffeine out of your diet altogether.
SWITCH TO GREEN TEA WITH LEMON: Both green tea and lemon act as natural diuretics that flush your system of excess fluids to battle water retention.
DON’T DRINK: Crying over insurance commercials? Maybe skip that evening glass of wine. Alcohol is a natural depressant that can make a bad mood a lot worse.
MINIMIZE YOUR SUGAR INTAKE: Highs and lows in your blood sugar can make a hormonal mood worse. Crave something sweet? Stick to a square or two of dark chocolate or fruit to satisfy your sweet tooth.
EAT EVERY THREE HOURS: Go too long without a snack and your blood sugar might drop low enough to summon an attitude problem. Make sure to keep a little something in your purse that can help you stabilize your mood.
CHART YOUR SYMPTOMS AND SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP: If nothing gives you relief, start writing down your symptoms: moods, cramps, nausea and all. Once you have several months of data, take your notes to a doctor who can help you find relief.
