Shevchenko announces end of Ukraine contract

Ukraine and AC Milan legend Andriy Shevchenko has announced the end of his time in charge of the Ukraine national team.

After a five-year spell as his country’s coach, Shevchenko has called time on his tenure, having guided them to a relatively successful Euro 2020 before being eliminated by England this summer.

“I’ve spent five years with the national team,” Shevchenko wrote on Instagram.

“With hard work we’ve shown that we are capable of playing a modern style of football.

“Thanks to all the fans for your support and criticism. We’ve shown together that we can be competitive and exciting.”

The Ukrainian federation are yet to confirm the coach’s departure, nor have they commented.

Ukraine currently sit second, behind France, in their group for qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Shevchenko is his country’s record goalscorer, having netted 48 times for Ukraine during his playing days. He is also a Ballon d’Or winner, being named the world’s best player at AC Milan in 2004.
