Sanwo-Olu Renames Ikeja Military Cantonment After Late Gen. Lagbaja

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has honored the late Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja by renaming the Ikeja Military Cantonment as T. A. Lagbaja Cantonment in recognition of his service, courage, and sacrifice to Nigeria.

Speaking at the renaming ceremony on Friday, Sanwo-Olu described Lagbaja as one of Nigeria’s finest military officers, who dedicated over three decades to defending the nation.

A Symbol of Honor and Legacy

🔹 “This is more than a change of name. It is a statement of respect, gratitude, and recognition for courage, sacrifice, and service,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
🔹 He highlighted the cantonment’s historic role in shaping Nigeria’s military, calling it a home of bravery, discipline, and patriotism.
🔹 The governor emphasized that Lagbaja’s leadership in counter-insurgency, internal security, and peacekeeping missions made him deserving of this tribute.

“We Must Honor Our Heroes”

Sanwo-Olu urged Nigerians to emulate Lagbaja’s patriotism, courage, and discipline, stressing that:
✅ The renaming sends a strong message that Nigeria will always honor its heroes.
✅ Military personnel deserve recognition, not just in times of conflict but also in peacetime.
✅ Lagos State remains committed to supporting the armed forces through security collaborations, infrastructure development, and welfare initiatives.

A Lasting Tribute to a National Hero

“Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja’s name will now be permanently etched into the foundation of this cantonment,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
He expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Army and the Ministry of Defence for the initiative, adding that honoring heroes should be a national culture.

Who Was Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja?

🔹 Served as Chief of Army Staff from June 2023 to November 2024.
🔹 Appointed by President Bola Tinubu on June 19, 2023.
🔹 Died on November 5, 2024, at age 56 after battling an illness.

Sanwo-Olu concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the Nigerian military, ensuring they have the resources needed to protect the nation.
