Former Arsenal and Real Madrid star Julio Baptista has waded into football’s most heated debate Messi or Ronaldo and given Cristiano Ronaldo the edge, citing his “more difficult journey” and broader career achievements.
In an exclusive chat with Foot Italia, Baptista acknowledged the greatness of both players but ultimately tipped the scales in CR7’s favor.
“Messi has more natural talent, but Cristiano built his career,” Baptista said. “He won the best player in the world at Manchester United. He won the Champions League there. That was a little more difficult.”
The Brazilian believes Ronaldo’s ability to dominate in multiple leagues from England to Spain, Italy, and now Saudi Arabia showcases a level of adaptability and hunger that sets him apart from Messi, who spent the bulk of his career at Barcelona.
While Messi’s brilliance is undeniable, Baptista said he would have loved to see the Argentine challenged across more clubs.
“Messi always played with great players at Barcelona. Yes, he went to PSG and now MLS, but it wasn’t quite the same. Cristiano did it in so many different places.”
As both legends approach the end of their careers Ronaldo starring for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia and Messi dazzling fans in the MLS with Inter Miami their rivalry remains a cornerstone of modern football history.
Baptista’s final take?
“Ronaldo has more variety on his CV. That deserves recognition. That makes him the GOAT for me.”
No matter who fans side with, the Messi Ronaldo rivalry is sure to remain a timeless conversation in football circles for generations to come.
