Havant & Waterlooville have confirmed the loan signing of Lorenz Ferdinand, son of Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, from Brighton & Hove Albion for the rest of the season.
The 18-year-old goalkeeper, who is part of Brighton’s Under-21 setup, will gain valuable experience with the seventh-tier side, with the club playfully referring to the move as “work experience.”
Havant & Waterlooville’s Statement
The club released an official statement welcoming the young shot-stopper:
“Havant & Waterlooville Football Club are thrilled to announce that goalkeeper Lorenz Ferdinand has joined on work experience from Premier League outfit Brighton & Hove Albion for the remainder of the season! Ferdinand, 18, came through the set-up at Brighton & Hove Albion, where he continues to refine his trade in their Under-21s setup.”
“Lorenz links up with Shaun North’s side for the run-in as the push towards the end of the season continues! We welcome Lorenz to the Hawks and look forward to seeing him in action very soon.”
Big Expectations, Big Name
With Rio Ferdinand regarded as one of England’s greatest defenders, there is naturally extra expectation on Lorenz to succeed in the sport. However, while being in Brighton’s academy is promising, there are no guarantees he will follow in his father’s footsteps.
Both Brighton and Ferdinand Sr. will closely monitor his progress as he looks to impress in the Southern League Premier Division South.
