The Spartak Moscow forward is prosecuted for the import of more than 1300 kilos of cocaine with a value of £65 million, confirms The Public Prosecution Service.

According to the report in Dutch outlet Het Parool, two batches of about 650 kilos and 713 kilos of cocaine were intercepted in the port of Antwerp at the end of January 2020.

Promes, who has played for the likes of Sevilla and Ajax, has already been suspected of involvement in drug trafficking and participation in criminal organisation.

The pre-trial hearing is slated to take place next Monday.

As he plies his trade in Russia, the case ‘can he handled by the court without his presence, but with a lawyer authorised by him’ if he does not come to the Netherlands.

On the prosecution, his lawyer Robert Malevicz refused to comment, saying: “I will do that during the session next Monday.”

It’s not the first time the 31-year-old has landed himself in hot water as he was prosecuted for attempted murder and aggravated assault.

In December 2020, Promes was arrested on suspicion of stabbing his cousin at a gathering back in July.

He spent two days in jail before being released but the police investigation continued on until May 2021.
