Popular Nigerian influencer Papaya Ex has finally addressed the uproar surrounding the outfit she wore to Priscilla Ojo’s traditional wedding, which featured photos of the bride and her husband, Tanzanian singer Juma Jux, attached to the dress in unexpected places.
The eye-catching outfit drew social media backlash after Juma’s photo was placed directly on Papaya’s chest, while Priscilla’s image appeared on her waist. The moment even sparked a lighthearted confrontation on the dance floor, with Priscilla jokingly asking, “Why did you put my husband on your chest?” to which Papaya replied, “I’m sorry my love, you know I love you.”
Speaking with content creator Egungun (Kuye Adegoke), Papaya pushed back at critics, saying:
“I feel like Nigerians are too somehow. They sexualize everything. If I’d put the picture here [pointing lower], they’ll still complain that it’s close to my coochie. You understand?”
She further clarified that she apologized directly to Priscilla, saying:
“When they told me, ‘oh Papaya, it’s supposed to be here,’ I felt very sorry. I even told the wife, like, ‘you know I love you, I will not do something you know…’ and she said, ‘yeah I understand, it’s okay.’”
When asked about the cost of the controversial outfit, Papaya revealed she spent ₦4.5 million on it. Egungun also got her to confirm that she’s now based in Dubai, where her rent in the upscale Downtown district reportedly goes for around ₦12 million per month.
Despite the controversy, Papaya Ex seems unbothered, showing that when it comes to fashion statements and living large she’s not backing down.
