Obasa’s Legal Team Insists on Court Case, Dismisses Withdrawal Rumors

The legal team of ousted Lagos Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has denied any plans to withdraw the lawsuit challenging his removal, insisting they are fully prepared for the court hearing scheduled for February 28.

Obasa’s lead counsel, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), stated that despite ongoing political efforts to resolve the crisis, no directive has been given to abandon the case.

“Our client has not communicated anything to us regarding withdrawal, so we are proceeding with the case as planned,” Fashanu told The PUNCH on Tuesday.

Obasa was removed as Speaker on January 13 while he was in the United States. Upon his return on January 25, he rejected the removal, insisting it was not done through the proper process.

Efforts by APC leaders, including former governors Bisi Akande and Olusegun Osoba, to mediate have reportedly led to a proposal for both Obasa and the new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, to step aside for a neutral candidate from Lagos West. However, Obasa’s camp has remained silent on whether he would accept this arrangement.

Meanwhile, a Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the remand of three Assembly workers in DSS custody over an altercation with security operatives. The workers—Ibrahim Olanrewaju, Adetu Adekunle, and Fatimoh Adetola—face charges of obstructing DSS officers and cyberstalking.

The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) has condemned their detention, calling for their immediate release and urging Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene.
