The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games‘ organising committee will reportedly distribute condoms to the participants on their departure from the village, but not during their stay.
However, the committee has explained that participants will be able to bring alcoholic beverages and consume them in their rooms, as part of their efforts to ensure the safety of the Olympics amidst the pandemic.
According to the Japanese agency Kyodonews, the recent Olympic tradition of condoms being distributed to participants will be brought to a halt to prevent the spread of the virus.
At first, the committee planned to distribute 160,000 condoms at the village and advise athletes to not use them and keep them as souvenirs in order to minimise social interactions to contain the virus outside the Olympic bubble. This tradition started at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 to raise awareness about AIDS.
Fans in the stands
The Japanese government is expected to officially announce on Monday whether they will finally allow fans to attend the Olympic events.
According to sources, they are studying the possibility of allowing around 20,000 spectators to attend the opening ceremony, while the government has stated that a maximum of 10,000 people will be allowed at events such as games and concerts in areas that are not under the state of emergency or COVID-19 quasi-emergency, as long as they do not exceed 50 percent of the venue’s capacity.
The government and Olympic officials are studying the possibility of applying this policy to the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will begin on August 24.
