The new German Government will fight illegal migration by controlling borders and expelling migrants, potential future German chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Wednesday.
We will take a new course in migration policy. We will improve regulation and control and significantly put an end to illegal migration. Control will be carried out at national borders, and asylum seekers who are denied will be expelled, Mr Merz told a news conference following coalition talks with the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).
It will be possible to obtain German citizenship only after five years of living in the country, and not three, as it is now, the official said.
