The Niger State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reported significant progress in its fight against drug trafficking and abuse within the state.
According to a statement issued by the Niger State Commandant of the NDLEA, Shehu Godabawa, the agency made substantial arrests and drug seizures throughout October 2024.
During October, the NDLEA Niger State Command successfully arrested a total of 38 suspects involved in various forms of drug-related offenses across the state.
These arrests included individuals suspected of drug trafficking, illegal drug possession, and dealing in illicit substances.
The total weight of the drugs seized amounted to an impressive 226.845 kilograms, a notable accomplishment in the ongoing effort to curb the spread of drugs in the region.
The command also announced that eleven of these suspects, identified as drug dealers, have been formally charged and brought before the court on charges of illegal dealing and possession of illicit drugs. These legal actions reflect the NDLEA’s commitment to prosecuting offenders to the full extent of the law and deterring others from engaging in drug-related crimes.
In addition to its enforcement activities, the NDLEA Niger State Command has been proactive in raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. Throughout October, the agency conducted 37 sensitisation and enlightenment programs targeting various communities, schools, and public gatherings across the state.
These initiatives aim to educate the public, particularly young people, about the health risks and social consequences of drug abuse and encourage them to make informed decisions.
In his statement, Godabawa highlighted the NDLEA’s dedication to maintaining a drug-free society and commended his team’s efforts. He emphasised that the agency remains focused on reducing the supply and demand for drugs in Niger State through a combination of enforcement, public awareness, and rehabilitation programs.
The NDLEA Niger State Command is determined to address the issue of drug trafficking and abuse through continuous enforcement and community-based awareness programs. We urge community members to support our efforts by reporting any suspicious drug-related activities, Godabawa stated.
The NDLEA’s recent actions in October demonstrate the agency’s ongoing commitment to making Niger State a safer, healthier place by cracking down on the illegal drug trade and promoting awareness to prevent substance abuse.
