The senate, on Wednesday, concurred to a bill earlier passed at the house of representatives.

With the development, the college of education will now be known as Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo.

Ahmad Lawan, the senate president, said the bill has repealed the act that established Adeyemi College of Education and re-enacted a new one for the establishment of the Adeyemi Federal University of Education.

The bill for the upgrade of the foremost college of education was passed in the eighth national assembly but the President Muhammadu Buhari had declined assent to it.

The bill is now expected to be transmitted to the presidency for the president’s assent.

In mid-2019, Buhari had approved the sum of N208 billion for the upgrade of federal universities.

The senate had, in July 2021, passed a bill to upgrade the Maritime Academy of Nigeria in Oron, Akwa-Ibom state, into a full-fledge university for maritime studies.

In February, the federal executive council (FEC) would approve 20 new private varsities, bringing the number of privately-owned tertiary institutions to 99.

This had followed after a number of polytechnics were similarly created.
