Nigerian singer Naira Marley has responded to the news of his exoneration in the case linked to the death of his former signee, Mohbad, who passed away in September 2023.
On February 25, 2025, the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), Lagos, issued new legal advice acquitting Naira Marley and others involved in the investigation. The legal advice was read and implemented at the Magistrate Court sitting in Sabo, Yaba, Lagos State, by Magistrate Ejiro Kubenje.
Music promoter Samson Balogun, also known as Sam Larry, Owodunni Ibrahim (Primeboy), and Mohbad’s former manager, Opere Babatunde, were also cleared of any involvement, according to reports.
Following the announcement, Naira Marley took to social media, sharing a verse from the Holy Quran on X:
“And whoever puts all his trust in Allah, He will be enough for him.” (65:3)
He also posted on his Instagram story:
“And remember, O Prophet, when the disbelievers conspired to capture, kill, or exile you. They planned, but Allah also planned. And Allah is the best of planners.”
The singer reposted a fan’s message highlighting his struggles, stating how he endured public backlash, cancel culture, and mass judgment but still returned home to face the justice system alone.
Since Mohbad’s tragic and controversial passing in 2023, Naira Marley has faced heavy criticism, with many cutting ties with him and social media users calling for his cancellation. He also lost over 50,000 followers in the wake of the allegations.
