Manchester City extend winning run at Everton

Manchester City extended their winning run to 17 on Wednesday with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Everton at Goodison Park.

Pep Guardiola opted to rest John Stones while Ilkay Gundogan was unavailable due to a slight injury, but it didn’t affect the in form Premier League leaders.

Phil Foden put City ahead on 32 minutes. The young Englishman fired a low right footed shot from the edge of the box which clipped Seamus Coleman‘s leg and deflected past Jordan Pickford.

Yet the lead didn’t last long, as Everton conjured up a rare chance five minutes later and, somewhat fortuitously, levelled the score. Lucas Digne‘s initial effort struck the post and rebounded in off Richarlison‘s thigh to give Carlo Ancelotti‘s side encouragement going into the break.

City emerged brightly after the restart and it looked a matter of time before they’d regain their lead.

On 62 minutes, that moment arrived, with Riyad Mahrez hitting an unstoppable effort from the corner of the box which hit the back of the net via the post.

The game was put beyond any reasonable doubt with 13 minutes left on the clock as another left footed strike got the better of Pickford.

Bernardo Silva was teed up by Gabriel Jesus before unleashing a powerful effort past the England goalkeeper, although the former Sunderland man will have been disappointed at not having got a stronger glove on the ball.

City are now ten points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
