Luis Suarez won’t travel to play for Uruguay in the September international break, having suffered a knee injury in Atletico Madrid’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal on Sunday night.
He’ll stay in the Spanish capital and work on his recovery, aiming to be back in time for Atleti’s trip to take on Espanyol on September 12.
“An MRI scan revealed a moderate edema, detected on the posterior part of the player’s left knee,” Atletico Madrid said in a statement.
“The club’s medical services have informed the Uruguayan football federation and the player has been ruled out of the upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifying matches.”
Uruguay are due to visit Peru and then play home qualifiers against Bolivia and Ecuador in the September international break.
