Lobi announced the appointment of Lonnstrom in a short ceremony at the team’s training facility, inside the indoor hall of the McCarthy Stadium, on Tuesday.

Lobi Stars chairman Philip Nongu welcomed the new coach and expressed his delight with the appointment of the Finnish.

We’re delighted to have coach Lönnström on board. His expertise and passion will undoubtedly elevate our team’s performance, Nongu said.

We are here at this important event to introduce to the Benue community, the players, as well as sports journalists, the newly appointed head coach, Mr Lönnström who will be working together with the other technical crew members with the needed intent of moving the club out of current position as well as making it more competitive.

Lonnstrom replied to the heartfelt welcome message saying: I’m honored to be part of Lobi Stars’ rich history and committed to driving the team to success.

The 50-year-old will fill the role left by Eugene Agagbe and will work along with technical adviser and former Super Eagles striker Daniel Amokachi.

Lonnstrom tactician began his managerial career at 16, with his native Myllykosken Pallo-47 from 2005 to 2011. He has had several coaching spells, ranking from Roi Et United in 2012 before coaching the Thailand U-16 national team in 2024.

Lobi have won just two of 10 games in the NPFL this season and are currently sitting at the bottom of the table with nine points.

The Pride of Makurdi will be looking to improve their form as they face Abia Warriors at home in a league game on Saturday.
