Lagos housemaid Akpan arraigned for allegedly stealing employer’s $15,000

The police at the Ikoyi Division, Ikoyi, Lagos have arrested a housemaid, Glory Bright Akpan, 25, and charged her before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing her employer’s $15, 000.

The suspect allegedly used a razor blade to cut a bag belonging to her employer, Mr. Fawaz and allegedly stole the money.

A police source alleged that the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of Ikoyi Division, Lagos, CSP Tijani Mustapha N’ abba ordered his men to arrest Akpan following a complainant by Mr. Fawaz that he suspected her maid to be the one who allegedly used a razor blade to cut his bag and stole the sum of $15, 000 he kept inside after he left her at home on trust for work.

Akpan was charged before the Igbosere Magistrate’s court sitting at the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, Lagos on a one count charge of stealing.

Police counsel, O. Salami informed the court that the defendant committed the offence on 12 October, 2021 at 23 Olawale Dawudu Street, Angelina Court, Ikoyi, Lagos where she resides with the complainant.

Salami told the Court that the complainant reported to the police that he reasonably suspected his maid, Akpan to be the one who allegedly used a razor blade to cut his bag and stole the sum of $15,000 he kept in it.

Salami said the offence committed was punishable under section 287of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Akpan, however, pleaded not guilty to the alleged offence in the open Court and her counsel, Mr. Anayo Agbo urged the Court to grant the defendant bail in the most liberal terms on the ground that the defendant is still innocent of the allegation levelled against her by the police until it is proven otherwise.

Chief Magistrate, B.O. Osunsanmi granted her bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Osunsanmi adjourned the case until 26 November, 2021 for mention and ordered that the defendant be kept at the Kirikiri correctional facility till she perfected the bail conditions.
