An inmate who escaped from the Kuje Correctional Centre in the Federal Capital Territory, Haruna Sunday, has been apprehended by the Nasarawa State Police Command for allegedly stealing property from a house in the Masaka community, in the Karu Local Government Area of the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, while addressing newsmen at the command headquarters, confirmed the development on Wednesday.
According to Nansel, the suspect allegedly broke into the apartment on Thursday, June 8, and stole some mobile phones and a television set.
Policemen attached to the Masaka Police Division, he explained, arrested the suspect on Sunday following a tip-off, saying that upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to have escaped from Kuje Correctional Centre when it was attacked in 2022.
According to Nansel, “the suspect will be handed over to the Nigeria Correctional Service for further action.”
The suspect was awaiting trial before the attack that paved the way for his escape in 2022.
According to the suspect, he was hiding at a friend’s place in Kaduna State after the escape and was later lured into crime, which he regretted.
Nansel also confirmed the arrest of 17 other suspects for various criminal offences, ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms, among others, between May 25 and June 8.
He explained that four firearms and three rounds of live ammunition were recovered from them, assuring of the command’s resolve to curb crime in the state and called for the cooperation of the public in order to succeed.
