Jose Mourinho Tipped to Replace Martinez as Portugal Coach in Shock Ronaldo Reunion

Portuguese football could be heading for a seismic shake-up, as reports suggest Jose Mourinho is “close” to taking over as Portugal’s national team manager, replacing Roberto Martinez after the UEFA Nations League in June.

According to CNN, the Portuguese FA has lined up the Fenerbahce boss to take charge this summer, setting up a sensational reunion with Cristiano Ronaldo, whom Mourinho coached during their trophy-laden stint at Real Madrid (2010–2013).

Despite past tensions between the two, sources say Ronaldo’s presence won’t be an issue for Mourinho, who is reportedly eager for the challenge especially with the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon.

For now, Martinez remains in charge, set to lead Portugal through the Nations League semi-finals and the final or third-place play-off. But insiders claim the decision has been made: Mourinho will step in after the tournament.

Meanwhile, Mourinho remains focused on his current job at Fenerbahce, where the club trails rivals Galatasaray by just 3 points with 7 games to go in the Turkish Super Lig title race.

If confirmed, this move would mark Mourinho’s first foray into international management and possibly the final chapter in his long-running connection with Cristiano Ronaldo.
