Nigerian singer Joeboy has opened up about an experience that taught him the importance of trusting his instincts when making career decisions.
In a recent interview, the “Sip (Alcohol)” crooner revealed that before releasing the hit song, he was advised against it because it wasn’t the typical high-tempo or love song that his fans were used to.
“There was a time I called the person who does my ESP stuff and told him I wanted to change my song. He asked if I was sure, and I said yes. I then played a couple of songs, and they told me it wasn’t a club banger or high tempo. They said, ‘Are you sure this is where you wanna go? It’s not a love song, and you know that people love you for your love songs,’”Joeboy recounted.
Despite the skepticism, Joeboy followed his instincts and went ahead with the release. To his surprise, “Sip” became one of his biggest songs, resonating with audiences both in Nigeria and internationally.
“I decided to do it whether it worked or not. It worked way beyond my expectations, and ‘Sip’ is one of my biggest songs,”he said.
Reflecting on the experience, Joeboy emphasized that not all advice should be followed blindly, as people often give opinions based on their own perspectives rather than the full picture.
“This is why you shouldn’t take every advice because sometimes people only see things from their own perspective. It doesn’t mean they wish you bad, but that’s just how they see it. If you stand here, you’d see nine, and if you stand there, you’d see six. They may not be giving you bad advice; it would simply just be from their own understanding,” he explained.
His story serves as an inspiration to creatives and professionals alike, reminding them that while feedback is valuable, trusting one’s vision is equally important.
