It has happened. Jay Z responded to Lemonade, after a month of speculation as to when the hell Jay Z would respond to Lemonade. According to report in GQ.
Conspiracy theories were shared—Jay Z and Beyoncé played us! Beyoncé made the album in secret! He’s working on an entire album in response!—and, as with everything Beyoncé-related, it was all a guessing game. But now we have our first comment from Jay Z on the matter, and it is…all about Tidal. Womp.
Hov contributed a verse on the remix of Fat Joe’s “All the Way Up”: “You know you made it when the fact / Your marriage made it is worth millions / Lemonade is a popular drink and it still is,” Jay Z raps. Which, okay, sure, but where’s the juice? Where’s the drama? And where, oh where, is the apology? If you hurt our Beyoncé, you’d best seek forgiveness in a very public manner, sir.
But alas, he’s just bragging about how Lemonade was good for Tidal, and he did this on—no surprises here—a track released exclusively on Tidal. Which is right on schedule, seeing as our free trials expired this week now that it’s been a month since Lemonade was released.
Jay Z then goes on to talk even more about Tidal, bragging about Tidal’s possession of Prince’s music and saying, “Prince left his masters where they safe and sound / We never gonna let the elevator take him down.” Okay, noted. Can we talk more about the elevators, though? Specifically, what really happened in the elevator fight with Solange? Come on, Jay.
It’s still being rumored that Jay Z has a full album to be released soon (potentially a collaboration with Beyoncé). But the only thing we can really be certain of in this cruel world is that it’ll just be one more surefire way to hang on to our Stockholm-syndrome loyalty to Tidal.
