It’s because I support Peter Obi’ — Iyabo Ojo cries out over N18m tax

Iyabo Ojo, the actress, has cried out over the “hefty” tax she is being asked to pay by the Lagos state government.

On Monday evening, the filmmaker said she was ordered by the state government to pay the sum of N18,640,092.00 as her personal income tax.

Ojo shared a document on social media wherein she was directed to pay the amount within seven days or face the consequences.

According to the document, the movie star has a tax liability of N7,376,000.00 for the year 2022 and an outstanding liability of N11,264,092 for the 2021 income year.

The film star had earlier called out Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos governor, and the state government while demanding an explanation for the hefty tax bill.

The actress, in a recent Instagram live session, displayed papers showing that she has been paying taxes.

Ojo also wondered how the state government came up with the N18 million personal income tax.

She alleged that a friend “within the state government caucus” told her about the development two weeks ago.

Ojo claimed she was told her ordeal with the state government is because she supports Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate during the last general election.

I pay taxes. I don’t want to scatter them because they are arranged. Do you see? I just pay. Be it a business tax, taxes here and there. See, these ones too are tax. This one is even like one of the recent ones we just paid for in Lagos. Do you see? Paid,” she said.

“So, I have a lot fit them like that that we’ve paid for. You can see their stamp on it. These are taxes that I have paid for over the years.

“I pay tax for my business. I pay tax for my house. I pay tax for everything. But this personal income tax is annoying. If you say I should come and pay tax, how much do they pay celebrities? How much do they pay actresses? OK fine. As an influencer, as an actress, how do they come up with this tax that they charge?

“I’m not saying I’m not gonna pay, but how do you come up with this outrageous amount? It’s too much.

“And, someone very close to me sent me a message and said ‘I heard about this thing two weeks ago you know because it’s within their caucus, they were saying it that because you support Peter Obi…’ I don’t care. I will support whoever I want to support because it is my right to do so. I’m not fighting anybody. I don’t want an issue with anybody. What I believe in is what I believe in. What you believe in is what you believe in.”
