IGP orders probe of D’banj over Seyitan rape allegation

Mohammed Adamu, the inspector-general of police (IGP), has ordered a probe into the rape allegation against Oladapo Oyebanjo, a singer better known as D’banj.

Amid the recent conversations about sexual assault and violence against women on the internet, Seyitan Babatayo, a Nigerian lady, had claimed that the entertainer raped her at Glee hotel in Victoria Island in December 2018.

Following the frenzy that had trailed the claims made against him, the ‘Fall in Love’ crooner would later dismiss the lady’s account of the said incident as “false” and a slap on his marriage and “beautiful wife.”

He also demanded for apology and the sum of N100 million as compensation from her.

“That your client makes a compensatory deposit of the sum of N100m only through this chambers in favour of our client to assuage his battered image,” read a letter from Mike Ozekhome, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), who happens to be the singer’s lawyer.

According to Punch, a probe has been ordered into D’banj’s case in a letter signed by Idowu Owohunwa, a principal staff officer to the IG office.

With the reference number CB.7000/IGP.SEC/ABJ/VOl.484/801, the letter was said to have been addressed to the deputy IGP, Force Criminal Investigation Department, Area 10, Garki, Abuja.

“I forward herewith copy of letter dated June 5, 2020, received from Ojoge, Omileye, and Partners on the above-underlined subject,” the letter was quoted to have read in part.

“I am to respectfully convey the directive of the Inspector-General of Police that you treat. Accept the assurances of my esteemed regards please.”

It was gathered that the IGP’s office had written in response to a petition earlier addressed to the IG by Tommy Ojoge-Daniel, a lawyer to the alleged rape victim.

TheCable Lifestyle had reported how some celebrities took to social media to pour out their annoyance after an unfolding event in the rape scandal.
