Nigerian rapper Ice Prince has heaped praises on legendary lyricist MI Abaga, crediting him as the one who taught him how to rap and shaped his entire music career.
During an appearance on Isbaeu’s Curiosity Made Me Ask, Ice Prince described MI as a “big brother” whose influence and mentorship gave him the tools and discipline to stand out in Nigeria’s rap scene.
“I rapped with MI for years. That’s my big brother. He taught me how to do this, and he taught me well,” Ice Prince said confidently.
He emphasized that because of his solid foundation under MI, it’s impossible for him to deliver a bad verse:
“I can rap on any beat, with anybody, any rapper, and I will stand out. I’m not going to have a wack verse on a song. I was brought up by the best shout out to MI Abaga.”
Ice Prince rose to fame with “Oleku” in 2011 and went on to release hits like Superstar and Magician, becoming a household name in Nigerian hip-hop.
In a throwback to his humble beginnings, the rapper also shared in a December 2024 interview how he missed out on university because he couldn’t afford ₦20,000, a registration fee that changed the course of his life.
“I didn’t go to university because of ₦20,000. I had two weeks to raise it, and I couldn’t. That’s how I lost the admission and became a studio rat,” he revealed on Listen with Osi.
From being unable to afford school fees to becoming one of Nigeria’s most respected rappers, Ice Prince’s story is a powerful blend of resilience, raw talent, and mentorship.
