The vehicles involved were a Honda Accord with number plate EKY 365 FB, which was travelling out of Abeokuta, and a Honda Space Wagon with number plate KTU 246 AT, going in the opposite direction.

The driver of the Honda Accord was said to have lost control due to a tyre burst and excessive speeding, which made the car to veer off its lane and rammed into the Space Wagon, leading to the death of four persons on the spot and injury to three others.

However, one of the three injured persons later died in the hospital.

The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the accident, said it occurred at about 7.25am.

He said, “The driver of the Honda car lost control due to excessive speeding, veered onto the other lane and collided with the oncoming car.

“Three persons were initially injured, while four others died instantly at the scene of the accident. However, the post crash report indicated that one of the injured victims later died, making the number of the dead to rise to five, while the injured remain two.”

He said those who died were all males, while the injured were females.

Akinbiyi said the corpses of the victims had been deposited in the mortuary of the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Ogun State, while the injured were receiving treatment in the same hospital.

The Ogun State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Clement Oladele, also confirmed the accident.

Oladele said in a statement, “Two vehicles were involved, a black Honda Accord with number plate EKY 365 FB, which lost one of its tyres in motion and veered off to the opposite direction and collided head on with another Honda Space Wagon with number plate KTU 246 AT.

The crash was suspected to have been caused by speed limit violation and tyre burst.”

Oladele, while commiserating with the relatives of the crash victims, advised members of the public, whose relatives might have travelled in the affected vehicles, to contact the FRSC or the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital for identification of their relations .

The sector commander also advised motorists to properly maintain their vehicles and drive within approved speed limits.

He said the obstruction caused by the crash had been cleared and normal traffic flow had been restored on the road.
