Federer takes advantage of Mannario’s slip to reach 102 Wimbledon victories

Roger Federer advanced to the second round at Wimbledon after Adrian Mannarino retired due to injury in the fourth set of their first-round tie on Tuesday.

In what was his 102nd victory at Wimbledon, this was one of his more fortunate wins in the tournament as he was losing by two sets to one – albeit leading 4-2 in the final set – when his opponent was forced to retire after sustaining a knee injury.

Federer struggled to find his rhythm from the start of the match, finding himself three break points down, although he managed to win the first set 6-4.

However, Mannarino took control of the match thereafter, winning the next two sets 6-7 and 3-6 to take a commanding lead into the final set.

But with Federer leading 4-2 and the score at 15-15 in the final set, the Frenchman slipped, twisting his knee, before having to retire.

Next up for Federer is a meeting with Richard Gasquet, as he looks to gain some momentum on his quest to secure his ninth Wimbledon title.
