Liam Payne, the former One Direction member, has passed away.
The 31-year-old singer was found dead on Wednesday after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
According to AP, Payne fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel in the Palermo neighbourhood of the Argentine capital. The songwriter sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Pablo Policicchio, the communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, confirmed that Payne had jumped from the balcony of his hotel room.
Police were called to the hotel in response to an emergency call just after 5 p.m. local time. The hotel manager reported that Payne was behaving erratically and potentially under the influence of substances.
Payne joined One Direction in 2010 at the age of 16.
The group became the biggest boyband in the world after their 2010 launch on ‘The X Factor’. The band broke up in 2015.
In June 2021, the singer disclosed his struggles with alcohol and prescription drug addiction during One Direction’s tours.
He also revealed that he had experienced severe suicidal thoughts at one point.
Recent reports had surfaced about Maya Henry, Payne’s ex-fiancée, alleging that he
pressured her to get an abortion and had broken off their engagement.
