Former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has identified Cyriel Dessers as a major threat ahead of Rangers’ crucial Europa League quarterfinal second leg against Athletic Bilbao. The match, set for Thursday night, will see Dessers and his teammates travel to Spain, with the Nigerian striker catching Valverde’s eye due to his impressive performances in the competition.
Despite facing inconsistent recognition with the Super Eagles, the 30-year-old Dessers has been in excellent form for Rangers, particularly in the Europa League. Speaking via a video on X, Valverde praised Dessers’ style of play, saying: “Dessers is constantly running into the spaces and is a beacon and a dangerous player.”
As for the upcoming encounter, Valverde emphasized the importance of the match for Athletic Bilbao, describing it as a “decisive game.” He reflected on the first leg, noting the need for improvements: “We lacked clarity and pace in the game. We didn’t manage to score, but now we have another chance.”
Valverde also acknowledged Rangers’ ability to counter-attack, as well as their comfort in dominating possession, given their style of play in Scotland. With Dessers leading the charge for Rangers, Valverde knows the Bilbao defense must remain vigilant to prevent the Nigerian striker from capitalizing on any opportunities.
