England Held to 1-1 Draw as Portugal’s Kika Nazareth Stuns Lionesses

England’s Women’s Nations League campaign got off to a frustrating start as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Portugal, with Kika Nazareth’s stunning goal cancelling out Alessia Russo’s early opener.

Sarina Wiegman’s side dominated possession and looked in control when Russo struck inside 15 minutes. However, England failed to capitalize on their dominance, with Lauren James attempting several long-range efforts but struggling to break down the Portuguese defense.

Nazareth’s Impact Turns the Game

Portugal manager Francisco Neto introduced Nazareth before the hour mark, and the Barcelona star made an instant impact, shrugging off Grace Clinton before curling a superb strike past Mary Earps.

Despite England finishing with 68% possession, they managed only four shots on goal, leaving Wiegman frustrated ahead of their next clash against World Cup winners Spain.

Player Ratings: Russo Shines in Draw

  • England XI: Earps (6), Bronze (8), Charles (6), Walsh (7), Bright (6), Williamson (6), Park (7), Clinton (6), Russo (8), Toone (6), James (7).
  • Subs: Carter (6), Kelly (n/a), Beaver-Jones (n/a).
  • Player of the Match: Alessia Russo.

Wiegman: “We Have Work to Do Ahead of Spain”

Reflecting on the result, Wiegman admitted improvements are needed before England take on Group 3 leaders Spain at Wembley on Wednesday.

“We played a very good first half, but we could have got more goals. The second half was different when they changed shape. We need to keep the ball better and be more clinical.”

With Spain securing a dramatic 3-2 win over Belgium, England must regroup quickly to keep their Nations League hopes alive.
