The Department of State Services (DSS) says security operatives have carried out a search on the residence and office of Tukur Mamu, publisher of Desert Herald.

We had reported on Wednesday that Mamu was arrested at the Kano international airport, after he returned from Egypt, where he was earlier detained by the authorities on his way to Saudi Arabia for lesser hajj.

Mamu, an aide to Ahmad Gumi, a popular Islamic cleric, has been involved in negotiations for the release of persons abducted on a train in Kaduna, in March 2022.

Speaking on the arrest on Wednesday, the DSS had said the publisher had questions to answer.

Giving an update on the arrest in a statement issued on Thursday, Peter Afunanya, DSS spokesperson, said incriminating materials were found during a search on Mamu’s house and office.

“So far, appropriate security agencies have executed valid search warrants on Mamu’s residence and office,” the statement reads.

“During the processes, incriminating materials including military accoutrements were recovered.

“Other items include large amounts in different currencies and denominations as well as financial transaction instruments.

“While further investigations continue, Mamu will, sure, have a day in court.”
