Oscar-nominated actress and Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo is set to take on the role of Jesus in the upcoming Hollywood Bowl production of Jesus Christ Superstar. The highly anticipated staging will run for three nights, from August 1 to August 3, 2025, at the iconic Los Angeles amphitheater.
Erivo’s casting marks a groundbreaking moment for the legendary rock opera, making her one of the few women to portray Jesus in a major production. Known for her commanding stage presence and powerful vocals, she is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the role, adding new depth to the timeless story.
Originally released as a concept album before its Broadway debut in 1971, Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock-infused retelling of the final days of Jesus Christ through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. The musical explores themes of faith, betrayal, and destiny against the backdrop of political and social upheaval.
The Hollywood Bowl production will remain faithful to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary score and Tim Rice’s iconic lyrics, featuring hits such as Superstar, Gethsemane, and I Don’t Know How to Love Him. Tony Award-winning choreographer and director Sergio Trujillo will helm the production, with musical direction by fellow Tony winner Stephen Oremus. The show is produced in association with Neil Meron and Robert Greenblatt, with casting by The Telsey Office.
With Erivo leading the production, Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl is set to be one of the most talked-about theatrical events of the year, offering a bold new take on the classic musical.
