Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones has sparked pre-match fireworks, branding Wrexham a “circus” as his side prepares for a high-stakes League One showdown at the SToK Racecourse on Saturday.
Wrexham, co-owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are just two games away from an incredible third straight promotion, with their eyes firmly set on Championship football. They currently sit second in the table after a gritty 2-1 win at Blackpool, holding a narrow two-point lead over Wycombe.
Charlton, still clinging to hopes of automatic promotion, are fourth—four points behind Wrexham after a stunning 4-0 demolition of Wycombe that has reignited their campaign. But with only two matches remaining, every point counts.
Speaking on ITV4’s EFL Highlights, Jones didn’t hold back:
“It’s a bumper game, we have to go to the circus and see what we can get.”
The comment is widely seen as a jab at the celebrity spotlight Wrexham has attracted under its famous ownership, though Jones insists his focus is strictly on football:
“All we do is take a game as it comes… we’re not looking at the play-offs or Burton at home. First, it’s Wrexham.”
While the glitz around Wrexham has drawn global attention, their performances have matched the hype. However, with Jones lighting the fuse, Saturday’s clash is shaping up to be as fiery off the pitch as it will be on it.
