Nigeria’s Raphael Onyedika played the full 90 minutes to help his Belgian team Club Brugge dished out a surprising 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in their Group B game on Tuesday night at the Jan Breydel Stadium.
Ghana’s Kamal Sowah scored Club Brugge’s opening goal in the first half before former Barcelona player Ferran Jutglà doubled the lead to seal the victory for the Belgian club to make it three wins from three matches.
Club Brugge currently sit at the top of Group B with maximum nine points with a seven goals difference, while Atletico Madrid dropped to the bottom of the group with three points.
In the other Group B game, hosts Porto defeated German side Bayern Leverkusen 2-0 at the Dragão Stadium on Tuesday night.
Super Eagles defender Zaidu Sanusi got his name on the scoresheet just six minutes into his introduction in the second half before another substitute, Galeno, scored in the 86th minute to secure the victory for Porto.
It is the Portuguese side’s first win in the competition after losing their first two opening matches of the group.
Elsewhere, Liverpool defeated Scottish side Rangers FC 2-0 in their third Group A game at the Anfield Stadium.
Trent Alexander-Arnold curled a beautiful freekick into the net to give Liverpool a 1-0 first-half lead. Mohamed Salah scored from the spot kick in the second half to secure the victory for the Reds and send them into the second position in the group.
Meanwhile, in Group D, French club Marseille hammered Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon 4-1 at the Orange Vélodrome in Marseille, France, to record their first win.
Inside one minute of action, Francisco Trincão curled the ball into the back of Marseille’s net just on the 18-yard line to hand Sporting a morale-boosting 1-0 lead.
It was not long before Alexis Sanchez equalized for Marseille in the13th minute before Amine Harit gave Marseille the lead three minutes later.
The visitors’ woes were compounded when goalkeeper Adán was sent off for handling the ball outside his 18-yard area, and Sporting paid heavily for it when Leonardo Balerdi scored the hosts’ third goal in the game.
The first half ended 3-1 in favour of Marseille.
Congolese defender Chancel Mbemba rounded off the job for Marseille with an 84th-minute goal to help the French club secure their first win.
Despite the loss, Sporting Lisbon remain at the top of Group D with six points.
In the other Group D match, Eintracht Frankfurt held Tottenham to a goalless draw at the Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, Germany.
