Jamie Carragher has weighed in on the growing pressure at Manchester United, warning that the club could be forced to change managers if results don’t improve but made it clear that Ruben Amorim is not the main problem.
The former Liverpool defender, speaking on Sky Sports, addressed the Portuguese coach’s difficult start at Old Trafford, where United now sit 14th in the Premier League after a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Newcastle their 14th league loss of the season.
Carragher noted that while results have been poor, Amorim’s commitment to a three-at-the-back system the very style that made him a success at Sporting CP shouldn’t suddenly be up for debate.
“People keep saying, ‘he’s got to change the system,’ but I don’t see it that way. That’s his DNA,” Carragher said. “If United hired him knowing that, why ask him to become something else now? If you want a different system, change the manager.”
Amorim’s tactical rigidity has been a major talking point, especially after United’s forwards continued to misfire despite the addition of Patrick Dorgu in January to boost the wing-back setup. But Carragher believes the problem runs deeper than formations.
“He’s come into a mess,” Carragher added. “He didn’t even want to take the job mid-season. This was supposed to be a summer appointment. The squad’s not good enough, the structure above him is chaotic — Amorim is the last person to blame.”
With only the Europa League left to salvage United’s season, Carragher’s comments could serve as a reality check for fans and the board alike: the issue might not be the man on the touchline, but the system above him both literally and organizationally.
