Araujo to undergo surgery but not ruled out of World Cup

Ronald Araujo has decided to undergo surgery to overcome the thigh injury that he suffered last Friday with the Uruguay national team.

Barcelona recommended the operation and he, as confirmed, has listened to the club because, in addition, this option keeps alive the possibility of playing in the World Cup. The intention is that he will be operated on this week, probably on Thursday.

Araujo, who immediately returned to Barcelona after being injured and underwent tests on Saturday in the Catalan capital, met this Monday morning with the medical services and Xavi Hernandez.

Together they analysed the two options on the table: surgery or conservative treatment. The first possibility, which is the one he always contemplated, means being away from the pitch for around a month and a half and carries less risk of relapse.

With the second, on the other hand, the recovery time is unclear. The club encouraged him to undergo surgery, as when Samuel Umtiti and Ansu Fati ruled out the operation, the results were not as expected.

The defender has listened to the club and the intention is that he will be operated on this week in Finland.

Araujo, 23, is an important man in Barcelona’s squad. He is a permanent fixture in defence: he has played at right-back and in the centre of defence. He has played in seven of Barcelona’s eight LaLiga Santander and Champions League matches.

The international was injured during Uruguay’s friendly match against Iran in Austria on Friday.

Memphis Depay and Frenkie de Jong will undergo medical tests today to assess the extent of the injuries they suffered for the Netherlands against Poland on Thursday and which prevented them from playing against Belgium.

The striker could be out for almost a month with a right hamstring injury. The midfielder, on the other hand, is only carrying an overload, but will still be examined.
