Amid Kanye West’s issues with Adidas, Michael Jordan remains the king of sneakers

Forbes just announced that with Adidas cutting ties with him, Kanye West can no longer be considered a billionaire. Losing his income with the German sportswear brand made him lose more than two-thirds of his entire net worth. Before this whole drama happened, Kanye West’s entire net worth was around $2 billion. Although the rapper was never in agreement with Forbes over his estimated net worth. When he first got on the publication’s billionaire list, they reported he was just past $1 billion.

West immediately responded his actual net worth was $3.3 billion. When he reached $2 billion earlier in 2022, West responded again by saying his net worth was $4.3 billion. However, Forbes estimates that Kanye West’s overall deal with Adidas increased his fortune by $1.5 billion. In the sneaker industry, Michael Jordan’s deal with Nike made him create Jordan Brand and turned him into the most profitable sneaker brand in history. Many didn’t think they would see that day another brand could compete against him. Then Kanye West appeared.

Kanye West shares a Chicago influence from Michael Jordan

During the time in which Michael Jordan was at the peak of his powers as a Chicago Bulls star, Kanye West was growing up in the city of Chicago. He formed a group of young designers that included him, the late great Virgil Abloh, Don C and others. During that time, Kanye West developed his ambition to someday become a fashion designer in this vast sneaker culture industry. He finally made it happen when he signed a deal with NIke. But West and Nike didn’t se eye to eye and he jumped boats to Adidas.

As soon as he landed with the German brand, it was clear they finally had a figure that could lead a brand that would compete against Jordan Brand. At a certain moment, the two most requested and sold sneakers were Yeezy and Jordan. But this massive mental breakdown has left Michael Jordan as the undisputed and undefeated sneaker king. Kanye West was probably the only figure who could surpass Jordan, but he blew his chance in a matter of days.

Just last June, it was announced that Jordan Brand reached a $5 billion net worth. Yeezy falls a couple of billion short and it seems doomed to disappear completely. Kanye West quickly tarnished his entire reputation and his legacy with the anti-semitic comments he made. It is pretty shameful and painful to watch. A creative genius that dug his own grave in real time with the entire world watching. Michael Jordan’s secreat was to always keep a low profile, something Kanye should’ve done as well.
