Agbani Darego, the Nigerian model and ex-beauty queen, has taken to social media to celebrate the 20th anniversary of her emergence as Miss World.
Darego shared a video clip of her victory on her Instagram page on Tuesday with a short caption that described her nostalgic ecstasy.
“20 years today! Forever thankful for the experience @missworld,” she wrote.
In November 2001, Darego became the first indigenous African to win the Miss World beauty pageant.
The feat came a few months after she was crowned the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria.
She also became the first Nigerian to place among the top 10 semi-finalists, finishing seventh overall in Miss Universe pageantry.
The former beauty queen was the only contestant among the top ten to wear a modest one-piece swimsuit as opposed to a revealing bikini worn by others at the competition.
Following her success at the Miss World competition, Darego was honoured with a chieftaincy title by the council of chiefs of Lagos — making her one of the youngest chiefs in Nigeria at that time.
In April 2017, Darego married Ishaya Danjuma, son of Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, a politician and retired Nigerian army lieutenant general, in a ceremony held in Marrakesh, the fourth largest city in Morocco.
The couple welcomed their first son together in September 2018 and had another child in December 2020.
