The house of Representatives has moved to probe Alex Ikwechegh, a member representing Abia’s north/south federal constituency of Imo state, for assaulting Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver.
During a plenary session on Tuesday, the house referred Ikwechegh to the committee on ethics and privileges after a “point of privilege” was moved by Julius Ihonvbere, the majority leader.
Ikwechegh, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), made headlines for slapping and hurling insults at Abuwatseya.
In a viral video, Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North and South federal constituency of Abia state, is seen in a heated exchange with the driver whom he accused of disrespect for asking him to approach the car to receive his package.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command had invited Ikwechegh for questioning.
THE POINT OF ORDER
the parliament is obligated to protect its image.
Ihonvbere said he had been inundated” with calls and text messages of great intensity about the actions of the lawmaker.
He said lawmakers must be mindful of their actions for the image of the parliament.
Subsequently, Ikwechegh rose and apologised, saying there should be no reason for his actions despite the provocation.
Benjamin Kalu, deputy speaker who presided over the plenary, said Ikwechegh showed remorse and his apology was emotional and very touching.
The deputy speaker said Ikwechegh will not be hurriedly suspended as demanded by Nigerians but will face the ethics committee.
