Police return stolen mace to senate

The mace of the upper legislative chamber which was stolen by suspected thugs on Wednesday has been returned, TheCable repoet.

Uche Anichukwu, spokesman of deputy senate president Ike Ekweremadu, made this known in a statement on Thursday.

Joshak Habila, deputy inspector general of police (DIG), operation, returned the mace to the national assembly at about 11:35am.

It was received by the clerk of the national assembly.

The police had earlier announced the recovery of the mace at a flyover before the Abuja city gate.

Aremu Adeniran, deputy force public relations officer force headquarters, had said a “patriotic passerby” saw the mace and alerted the police.

Ovie Omo-Agege, suspended Delta senator, was said to have led unidentified persons to cart away the mace.

After the incident and the ensuing uproar, the senator was taken into police custody but was later released.

Following his release, Omo-Agege denied involvement in the incident.

The police have said that “a discreet investigation” into the matter is ongoing.
