Kanye West has sparked a new wave of controversy this time by claiming he invented rage music. During an April 26 appearance, the “Mercy” rapper said, “I invented rage, bro,” pointing to tracks like “Blood On The Leaves” and moments like “Ngas in Paris” as the genre’s starting points. Ye argued that Black people moshing became a thing because of him. While that may be true visually, musically, many fans and artists strongly disagree.
Trippie Redd is among the most vocal critics of Ye’s claim. Taking to his Instagram Stories on Monday (April 28), the Ohio rapper clapped back, crediting himself along with Playboi Carti, XXXTENTACION, and Lil Uzi Vert as the real pioneers of rage music.
“We paved the way. We popularized it,” Trippie said.
“I’m not gon’ let you old a** ngas say you invented something you ain’t invent. Ngas need to take [their] pills, man. These n**gas be psychotic.”
Trippie also revealed that Ye recently invited him to “pull up,” but he turned it down, saying Ye only does it “to put a n**ga beneath him.” He later reposted a tweet from Playboi Carti during the rapper’s own fallout with Ye, further solidifying his stance.
While Ye cites Yeezus as a key influence, many fans believe that the SoundCloud generation especially Carti’s Die Lit and Trippie’s Miss The Rage played a far more significant role in defining rage music. According to Billboard, the genre blends EDM-style synths with dark melodies, hard-hitting 808s, and explosive percussion. Rising stars like Yeat, SoFaygo, and Lancey Foux have continued to evolve the sound.
In short, the debate over who really invented rage music is heating up but the new school isn’t letting Ye rewrite the narrative.

Would you say Ye deserves credit for influencing the genre, or are the SoundCloud artists the real pioneers?
