MLS newcomers San Diego FC have vowed to take immediate action after a homophobic chant was heard multiple times during their scoreless draw against St. Louis City.

Club Condemns the Chant

Head coach Mikey Varas and technical director Tyler Heaps swiftly denounced the incident, with Varas stating:
“It has no place here. If they’re going to continue to come to the game and make that chant, it’s better that they don’t come here.”

In response, the club released a firm statement emphasizing their commitment to inclusivity:
“What took place during our first-ever home match does not reflect who we are as a club or the values we stand for. The use of homophobic language in our stadium is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

Plans to Prevent Future Incidents

San Diego FC has promised to unveil a detailed plan before their next home game on March 15 against Columbus Crew, ensuring a welcoming environment for all fans, players, and staff.

A Wider Issue in Football

The chant, often heard at matches involving Mexico’s national team, has led to FIFA fines and match suspensions in the past. MLS has largely avoided the issue, making this incident a concern for the league.

What’s Next for San Diego FC?

The team will be on the road against Real Salt Lake this weekend before returning home, where they aim to enforce their new measures at Snapdragon Stadium.
