The Federal Government has directed all Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to publicly disclose refunds made to customers who purchased meters under the Meter Asset Providers (MAP) scheme.
The directive, issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Monday, is aimed at improving transparency and consumer trust in the metering system.
🔹 Why the Directive?
Under the MAP framework, third-party investors supply and maintain meters for consumers, who pay upfront and later receive refunds through energy credits from the DisCos. However, many consumers have complained about delays and inconsistencies in these refunds.
To address these concerns, NERC has mandated DisCos to publish details of these refunds on their official websites.
🗣️ “This will demonstrate commitment and consistency to the scheme and encourage customers,” NERC stated.
🔹 FG’s Plan to Close the Metering Gap
With over 7 million unmetered customers, the government is intensifying efforts to ensure widespread metering.
Recently, Presidential Adviser on Energy, Olu Verheijen, highlighted the Presidential Metering Initiative, aimed at consolidating different metering programs to reduce losses and improve electricity bill collection.
🔹 First NESI Stakeholders Meeting of 2025
The NERC also held its first Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) Stakeholders Meeting of the year, discussing:
📌 Tariff methodology & impact of energy transition
📌 NESI liquidity & financial market evaluation
📌 Transition to a multi-tier electricity market
💡 What This Means for Consumers
With these moves, the FG is pushing for a more transparent and efficient electricity sector, ensuring that consumers who pay for meters get timely refunds while working towards full metering to eliminate estimated billing.
