Murtala Yakubu Ajaka, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in the last Kogi governorship election, has called for the removal of Senate President Godswill Akpabio following a heated clash between Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The drama unfolded on Thursday, February 20, 2025, when Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, protested over the unauthorized change of her seat in the Senate chamber.
Natasha Defies Akpabio’s Orders
Akpoti-Uduaghan, visibly displeased, questioned the move:
“Why was my seat moved without my consent?” she asked, refusing to back down.
Her defiance escalated tensions, leading Akpabio to order the Sergeant-at-Arms to remove her from the plenary session. However, Natasha stood her ground, boldly stating:
“I am not afraid of you, and I will not be silenced.”
She also accused Akpabio of partisanship, alleging that she had been consistently denied the opportunity to present bills for second reading since their previous altercation.
Ajaka Slams Akpabio’s Leadership
Reacting to the incident, Ajaka strongly criticized Akpabio, describing his treatment of Akpoti-Uduaghan as “legislative autocracy and rascality.”
He accused the former Akwa Ibom Governor of failing to uphold democratic principles, warning that his undemocratic leadership style is damaging the credibility of the Senate.
“In a democracy, the legislative arm is crucial in upholding values like inclusion and tolerance. However, under Akpabio’s leadership, the Senate has shown a troubling pattern of autocratic behavior. His actions against Senator Natasha not only diminished her dignity but also fueled concerns about the Senate’s lack of independence and its disregard for constitutional principles,” Ajaka stated.
The SDP chieftain stressed that silencing elected representatives is a serious threat to democracy, arguing that the Senate must be accountable and responsive to the people.
“When lawmakers are silenced, it signals a dangerous shift toward tyranny. If left unchecked, these actions will undermine the future of our democracy,” he warned.
Calls for Akpabio’s Removal Grow Louder
Ajaka did not hold back in calling for Akpabio’s immediate removal, arguing that the Senate needs a leader who can promote unity and fairness, not one who engages in political bullying.
“As a former Governor, Minister, and now Senate President, Akpabio should be a unifying figure, treating all members fairly regardless of gender, background, or political affiliation. Instead, his continuous harassment of Senator Natasha is unacceptable and must stop,” he added.
The Kogi politician urged his fellow lawmakers to take swift action, emphasizing that Nigeria deserves a Senate President who respects democratic values and fosters inclusivity.
“The Nigerian Senate must prioritize serving the people over power struggles that weaken our democratic institutions,”Ajaka concluded.
