The Dakar-born defender underwent a routine knee operation at Lyon Hospital on March 17, 1982 but was given the incorrect dosage of anaesthetic which caused brain damage and led to him falling into a coma.

A knee problem which appeared on a coaching course led to him having the procedure, with Adams reportedly telling his wife: ‘It’s all fine, I’m in great shape”.

He was cared for by his wife Bernadette at their home in Nimes, Southern France until his death.

He played 22 times for the French national side and also had spells at Nimes from 1970-73 and Paris Saint-Germain from 1977-79 and a move from OGC Nice.
