Blow for Scotland as Billy Gilmour tests positive for COVID-19

Scotland’s chances of progressing to the knockout rounds of the European Championship have been dealt a blow after Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour tested positive for the coronavirus.

Scotland go into their final group D game against Croatia knowing that a win will give them a chance at progression, but Gilmour‘s absence only complicates their task.

“The Scottish FA can confirm that a member of the Scotland national team playing squad, Billy Gilmour, has tested positive for COVID-19,” read a statement from the Scottish FA on Monday morning.

Having liaised with Public Health England since the positive test was recorded, Billy will now self-isolate for 10 days and therefore miss tomorrow’s EURO 2020 Group D match against Croatia at Hampden.”

Some controversy has arisen as a result of the test. With no close contacts being listed, eyebrows were raised when Liverpool‘s Andy Robertson swiftly deleted a video from his Instagram story that showed him playing table tennis with the midfielder. Aston Villa‘s John McGinn was also involved in the game.
